Building Permits
The 2020 National Building Code of Canada and the National Energy Code for Buildings 2020 are now in effect in New Brunswick. This also includes Tier II energy performance in section 9.36 of NBCC 2020. More information on Tier II points here.
Building Permits are required for the construction of new buildings which have over-night sleeping accommodations larger than 58 sq m (625 sq ft) and all accessory buildings over 55 sq m (592 sq ft) and for all structural work including the alteration, renovation, reconstruction, demolition, removal and relocation of existing buildings.
A Development Approval may still be required even if a Building Permit is not.
Building permits are required to protect both the property owner and the surrounding community by ensuring that any proposed construction is in conformity with applicable regulations. Building permits are also required to ensure that construction meets the National Building Code of Canada standards.
The following information will be required to complete an application for a Building Permit:
• Contact name and information for the owner, contractors and subcontractors;
• Property location and address;
• Lot size and dimensions;
• A site plan showing location of building(s) on the lot (setbacks);
• Building Plans submitted, or a completed wall section detail supplied
• Estimated cost of construction. *

The 2020 National Building Code requires that all new buildings constructed by prescriptive energy performance must obtain 10 points. The points can be achieved from a combination of insulation, HRV, air sealing, etc.
